Austin is one step further to getting its newest gleaming star in the skyline, and city leaders say this is big news not just for downtown but for the entire city. The Independent, Austin’s soon to be tallest building, broke ground Monday shortly after noon. The future tallest residential building west of the Mississippi river is set to be completed in December of 2018. “Truly an exciting day as we begin this project,” Austin mayor Steve Adler said at the ground breaking. Crews already started demolition in December on an existing building at the site at Third Street and West Avenue. The 58 story building will have 370 residences.
